If you read my other blog, The Pineapple Report, then you know that I no longer have the job that took me to the fabulous small towns of Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma depicted on this blog. I'm still taking pictures and I've even been to Aggieland since my August post (thanks for pointing that out Evil Spock), but I've decided that I am going to do all postings on The Pineapple Report until further notice.

Thanks!

tags: The Pineapple Report travel pineapple photo blog
pineapplehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07717329846224778218noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32312256.post-34096080118420686872007-08-16T21:20:00.000-05:002008-12-11T11:29:13.370-06:00The "ica" BuildingAustin, Texas
August 10, 2007

This a picture of the famed "ica" building (also known as the Bank of America building run by people too lazy to fix the lights on their sign). Back when those ads were running, there was actually pasture land between Austin and Georgetown. It was a nice drive. Now it is just bad traffic and strip malls. It isn't a conversation away anymore, just road rage and stress. Two cheers for progress. My friends were in town and wanted to go to Inner Space Cavern so I drove them up there. Once you get to Georgetown, it isn't a bad place even if you have to drive through Round Rock to get there from Austin.

Back in the day, Georgetown was covered in cow poop because The Chisholm Trail went through the heart of town.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWbKEEXUv9w1tVv2PhQBGNWhgv12-hjqOGQeBc6XgoJP7uMIu_1N_yW2ReeJToSJ4sMTfz-u6SLf6Dpw81KjzfrQDTRLnC2OQfT43ob74zmUbT2XOOh4sVpcxMTkIRnadYF04H1Q/s320/DSCN1278.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5096756944672008082" />

I don't know what this building is, but I took a picture because I thought it was cool.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1R0JDzOc4mVbkimVR2i26uWNhftToPfz4nZYYmyYNYa-B_EWsfPieptrq4jbgmDKKCJAlpXQSo0UhM0Kl_KcVyc9Oj9FPzQdUIlkc94KNRJ2mco0QDaSRHp7Chh1CQ6hKguHlTw/s320/DSCN1277.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5096756940377040770" />

And because anytime I go to the county seat, I take pictures of the courthouse. I spent the summer of 2005 working in Oklahoma and went to a lot funky little places and saw some strange things. Unfortunately, I did not take many pictures. However, I saw this speed limit sign when I exited the interstate at the toll booth in Stroud and managed to get a picutre of it. I really wondered, why 17 mph? Why not round it down to 15 or up to 20?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizevSCPNsd_yHmOVTN5tL29KT4Lgrr0Bb7AHsfAL5wcEXeeQWqf_pYi-Rpmt_J2bPFmQ6LEP-BUrAEpLbddi5wfexUnH3X07LASqdv0zoUrDiNtfgTGicbjU9C4o0oEy8mEryzSw/s320/06-13-05_1651.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5086779996373888482" />

tags: Travel Oklahoma Stroud I-44 toll road photo
pineapplehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07717329846224778218noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32312256.post-4158946713665510742007-07-09T22:18:00.000-05:002008-12-11T11:29:17.749-06:00I always enjoy a pun!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFLkpZsYGwW4ycwXggABOvOWgElvd5MyG5pue37T8-iXOfYQD1ntMGcEXNgrbMp3CY6PenH_E2pZH9lvZeY_oTbOxUCnr2pEzI8F_kCXbp2GdjpwSZN0iqt8Oi1zUmvErM524raA/s320/DSCN1184.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5085402774090268914" />

Ha ha! However, my obsession with my sitemeter has led me to Ted Nugent (see photo, left taken from www.tednugent.com). No foolin'. I admit, I was really curious. How could Ted Nugent's site possibly link to mine? I clicked on the link and it told me I had to register. Fine, no problem. I registered. But then I discovered that in order to find out what is in the hunting forum (where the link to my page is located), I have to subscribe. This is very different than registering because it requires a $20 payment. Well, Ted, I'm curious but not that curious. So, if anyone happens to get to my page from Ted Nugent's hunting forum, I am dying to know the context of the link to my page.

tags: sitemeter Ted Nugent hunting forum pineapple photo
pineapplehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07717329846224778218noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32312256.post-75120257096573233742007-06-26T00:36:00.000-05:002008-12-11T11:29:17.898-06:00Mean Eyed CatAustin, Texas

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsY1spITJj2hxTNOUrnB56fRlkm2wrUJH7dzlX-hAuIzPs0ffaMQ7VKzN-4EfJbXge7Ds8XrRhHRm1aRBZEP0D67SijyJFSnXJOoW8fAHvkmnHDEKP-VZ8qmDKhVXyGkGPkU_WVA/s320/DSCN1121.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5080236865860600754" />

That's right. Just like the Johnny Cash song. What else could you do with the old Cute-Rite chainsaw repair shop? Turn it into a funky Johnny Cash tribute bar, of course.

Well, actually some developers really wanted to turn it into condos. And now developers have snatched up all of the land around it and are busily putting up yet another place to buy overpriced things that nobody really needs (or can really afford) and more lofts (we don't have nearly enough of those in Austin). And even though the Mean Eyed Cat has been in business since 2004, the zoning doesn't allow for a bar and they just don't serve enough food to be a considered a restaurant. Well, now they have to face the music and try to get the property rezoned to stay in business. It is a kick ass little dive despite all of the crappy development around it. Of course there is a petition to save the place, and they have had a benefit concert to save the place (this is Austin afterall and we have got to keep it weird). Naturally, the Old West Austin Neighborhood Association is against the zoning change. Why? Because they think if there is one bar near their neighborhood then there will be a million tomorrow. Frankly, I would be more upset by the new development than the cool bar if it were in my neighborhood. Personally, I'm rooting for the Mean Eyed Cat.

For those of you unfamiliar with the song I have included the lyrics for your reading pleasure:

Mean Eyed Cat
by Johnny Cash

I give my woman half my money at the general store I said, "Now buy a little groceries, and don't spend no more." But she gave ten dollars for a ten cent hat And bought some store bought cat food for a mean eyed cat.

When I give her ten more dollars for a one way ticket She was mad as she could be Then I bet ten more that if she ever left She'd come a-crawlin' back to me When I woke up this mornin' and I turned my head There wasn't a cotton pickin' thing on her side of the bed I found a little old note where her head belonged It said, "Dear John, honey, baby, I'm long gone."

When I heard a whistle blowin', and the big wheels a-turnin' I was scared as I could be I put on my overalls and I headed to town Gonna bring her back with me.

I asked the man down at the station if he'd seen her there I told him all about her pretty eyes and long, blonde hair He spit his tobacco, said, "I'll be dad blamed...... I believe I did see her leavin' on the east bound train."

I bought a round trip ticket on the east bound train I was broke as I could be But when I come back, gotta buy another ticket Gotta bring her back with me.

Well, I got off the train somewhere in Arkansas And I worked up the guts to call my Mother-In-Law She said, "I'll tell you where she is, if you act right." "She's workin' four to twelve at Trucker's World tonight."

When I walked in she saw me, and she took off her apron And she grabbed her goin' home hat She bought a ticket with her tips And now we're curled up on the sofa, me and her....and that mean eyed cat

tags: Austin Texas Mean Eyed Cat Johnny Cash bar photo
pineapplehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07717329846224778218noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32312256.post-14370086915615660222007-06-26T00:05:00.000-05:002008-12-11T11:29:18.201-06:00Is that a fact?Austin, Texas
June 9, 2007

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7vHpHyVDVi9kuKszKAAbaYbiagcKL5y5Hk1qJ_BnyuANiAud9v43OIFgXp2grtmj1sXNd4VosxeHGPXtsryFCTwxmeH3CfcPFUIRcX28WORZULhYoz9OXRGx1KdS2LWmQSnUt0w/s320/DSCN1049.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5080235633204986786" />

I usually see this guy standing on the corner of 38th and Guadalupe on Saturdays. I came home early from my friends' anniversary party and was relaxing on the couch when I heard lots of squealing tires. I heard the car screech around the corner and start down my street. I got up and ran out on the front porch. That's when I heard the crash and screams. I took off running down the street. That's when I saw a guy running down the street and the truck crashed into my neighbors' house. By the time it was over, we had two fire trucks, two ambulances, and five cop cars on our street. The driver was found and arrested. Luckily, the only thing that got hurt was the house.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgME86YmT6VF9M_D8SmS3uZnXFEq_bDWoA0L1B_7oZ_pa2SqJAFJMkhSrht6r8rt3eo5g1-Hcd9udDA5geuhp7Az4uVNja2TPztTLeXEznHek2Cd4oKyJdl1NT_L64Q5s3B2ho8Ew/s320/DSCN0938.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5070809730556357842" />

tags: Austin Texas Memorial Day truck crash house photo
pineapplehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07717329846224778218noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32312256.post-66627907577557434292007-05-30T12:54:00.000-05:002008-12-11T11:29:20.652-06:00Where in the world was Pineapple?May 11, 2007
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz9X5g5q7Y0p6wON3ukgAAI8GySRH7mi5VRrcHLktweIQmSXF6NoLR-ifSoXxC54V5alXhWuW9X5NDrsR22_GBPjaR01orUhe3zmyxgQq_Dv5a0_jUsavr2o1rmJTXWBktHNREKA/s200/DSCN0925.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5066301513839144050" />

Look! Well, Garden City is one of the many towns in Texas with a name that is ironic or perhaps just hopeful. I got to visit two of them in one week (Big Lake and Garden City). While I was there, I bought a lottery ticket and decided that if I hit the jackpot, I would build them a much needed garden. When I asked about the town name, no one had an explanation. However, after a search on google, I discovered that the town was supposed to be named after a store proprieter named Mr. Gardner, but it was misspelled.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPYNp9yf8AFNqlfqiVIbIzovcG3GYHXucSM_PE2PoyIc-QKCC0Hbe2BsF2rUYjXFB6q-n4VyJOQboO_vlZn2PB3PLrXniCUTf7bSSbsangURvotUx08LkBB9IMLBOpBCcKJiC-Gg/s320/DSCN0916.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065567460978584594" />

This is the Glasscock County courthouse, built in 1910.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLC8x2pRDyiGKvCASucabb3h4WAVMERskL5I-28ZkjDjbmvFj8ErRoRpW274IkIMD-3SnSrd_TY5UCUNF9M415_-9NFwo9ZOeUUaYv0Fk49RLnYo1L-VnxhX-NbPDPcPEK89mrAg/s320/DSCN0915.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065567443798715394" />

This is the old jail (built in 1894).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_U-OjVcVK1CozuMs-8DSCmI68dqvN3yGYrHsGrcwKrDD418QglF3TyJPRqiHC9dyobUSY_OCBowcuRGTTq-pzT-XpB-XsYo4QbWoXowJ-Htd0zHjK9cv0IU0k7OvDOEPG-zJDsg/s320/DSCN0918.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065567478158453794" />

I don't know what this is, but it was on the courthouse grounds.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQEdgYbZaPPH6PjEsgnk6G7ZurZiHR4uYM2xYOeZ-ziJ_pIVlRUjBJae1E4IzQi3iFzt5AStTCDimuf7tY4jOmmq8B-s13O74qjbRWYE6bDjPiC3xX1s9Tg1p4ld0s4LVUuVof5w/s320/DSCN0919.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065567491043355698" />

This is the new jail and home of the tax assessor's office. This is what it looked like after we took it off the car:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgx0uqUI3cAiuAn-nwMStfFvtM-_-IPBMPm47qPaMDR4igl9b7s8dCsmnAXEBDDPlHvQX4rCzorFd-XCm0uXs9RGcFNcnsBl-MYiuGsr1JN_U5Ifgg3lWxoT9g6rB5XRcNk6KjDQ/s320/DSCN0888.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5062751025979546946" />

So here is the scary part. There was something else in the road and this is what made me lose control of the car. This is the point when I did a 180 across two lanes of traffic and ended up facing the wrong direction in the median. Of course, the car did not stop before it hit the fence in the center of the median. Here is the damage:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgErSH-zTd35D2rLzZyJx3nGdNLlpeO1y52o5Ajlt7TKHhoSrfTgojHJ-0rSiN6YIiVyfUbXqgTS8VIJBZjzTRkU05zHqSQjIAWyDQaf-HTKSeynHpr6-_DnT9JgQ27aVXq4vL9Jg/s320/DSCN0889.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5062751030274514258" />

This was probably one of the scariest things that has ever happened to me. But now that I have had some time, I can recall a couple of things about this that were pretty damn funny. For instance, after the car started spinning out of control, MOTL told me that I should slow down. Gee, thanks! Then, when I called the handy-dandy number on the back of my license for road side assistance I was explaining to the dispatcher where I was and she said I think you are near the wreck that was called in. I told her that I didn't see a wreck and she replied that I was the wreck. Duh!

Disclaimer: Do not try this at home (or on a busy highway).

tags: Travel Texas Columbus Houston car wreck blow out tire
pineapplehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07717329846224778218noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32312256.post-12774179907742586232007-05-01T22:59:00.000-05:002008-12-11T11:29:25.923-06:00Another dumb signI was in Houston at the Harris County courthouse when I saw this wonderful sign.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjb1fBukkQ5V1gZb2rQmrmeEkiNYXIJSIOq0JMBzlR8Ke6MAXk6tS8GHkng0LaoQItP-1jNJysiLOsAcX5QtD74jDJlIeiCOJ_Qf4tUcY8w-ayBrkxbxUWl4vXn9ezTmtSwFjv2Zw/s320/04-30-07_0747.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5059808427920940338" />

Do you think that they realize that chairs are, in fact, furniture?

tags: Houston Texas Harris County courthouse dumb sign
pineapplehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07717329846224778218noreply@blogger.com63tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32312256.post-86387933788612051412007-05-01T22:48:00.000-05:002008-12-11T11:29:26.575-06:00Today's lesson is: SHARP!I have these neighbors that decided to do some landscaping recently. Their choice of ground cover is quite interesting. It is broken glass. I found this interesting on many levels. For one thing, it should make for an interesting gardening experience when they decide that they want to plant things. Sounds like fun to kneel in a big pile of glass and dig around, does it? The other thing that is interesting is that they have a small child. I bet once that kid starts walking, it won’t take long to learn about sharp things. Oh, and the other fun thing is that they decided to fill in the cracks on the sidewalk with broken glass. It is not fun to walk through glass wearing flip-flops. I learned about sharp that day (and to walk on the other side of the street).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3EEyaI8k7E6eeKWw_QtA8Th4JsGwao8xk5xKCjb2ZmjplcoxQT7pcTlp8ndq6h-RjhDEY7Ks53RYC1_KWUdN1XUn6U3SbQIZqNK1gvWXfiMb_9swfxOe0cII6hz4qHzAFMdkf_Q/s320/DSCN0883.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5059806018444287234" />

Here is a close up of the broken glass.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8G4hQg6bSrSON-cdGcbNzKIBTxZu2TqeY7cAgDWBRKOYKXfyayhvKJd2XRwdlTeMMFKr1FwqLv9WN2sTRGWASKcPp-9PJcboKuFlSAn_FaqQUKpuuBbnCi72mNgXk8DzTKcJPFw/s320/DSCN0884.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5059806031329189138" />

and a pretty picture of the the future good times they will have gardening.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNi6tWvm6LVJYKMUnATkLPnQnex6Txev8ql08ZYB1GAMDhxz32FDcgxES3zxwqLh2UqyrY6gWpeXhGms3aoa7hyphenhyphen-i4HdJLfH_j6S8BhB2C7eH325goQV6We5Z085eri0yjitrg3w/s320/DSCN0886.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5059806039919123746" />

And the whole picture.

tags: broken glass landscaping
pineapplehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07717329846224778218noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32312256.post-7785736589132662772007-04-29T13:00:00.000-05:002008-12-11T11:29:26.824-06:00I want to meet the "Queen of Pies"!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHgkbZ0cL9NRIi1qzyqEiTEEEHDOj3rIVk5Ay-e2OjTczk7cCi1xl-w0VnfntnrDexy6fF_cW6GoB7yQALcm8aj4jus2eOo0LQqLAuCk5DucL6hMNWlUkl8dLx4-eqBtWK3bCdPQ/s320/DSCN0881.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5058913176347827410" />

(Click Picture for BIGGER!)
I've never eaten at Home Slice Pizza.
